Lost Money to a Scam? What to Do in the First Hour

Fast action gives you the best chance of getting money back.

Published 2 October 2026. General information, not legal advice.

Scams can happen to anyone, including careful people. If you have paid money to someone you now think is a scammer, speed matters.

In the First Hour

  1. Call your bank or card provider now, using the number on the back of your card. Say you have been scammed.
  2. Stop contact with the scammer. Do not pay any further "fees" to get money back.
  3. Change passwords for any account you shared details for.
  4. Keep evidence: screenshots, messages, account numbers, dates and amounts.
  5. Report it to Report Fraud (formerly Action Fraud) on 0300 123 2040, or to Police Scotland on 101.

Your Right to a Refund

Since 7 October 2024, banks must reimburse most bank-transfer scams (Faster Payments and CHAPS) up to £85,000, with some exceptions. You must claim within 13 months of the last payment.
