Southern Delay Repay: How to Claim Train Delay Compensation
How to claim Southern Delay Repay compensation: the delay thresholds, how to claim, the time limit and what to do if it is refused.
Southern says you can claim if you arrive 15 minutes or more late because of a delay or cancellation. Consumer Protection UK is independent and is not connected to Southern. This page sets out what Southern itself says on its official page, checked on 4 October 2026.
What You Get Back
| Delay or situation | As Southern states it |
|---|---|
| Season tickets | 25% of a single journey for 15 to 29 minutes; 50% for 30 to 59; 100% of a single for 60 to 119; 100% of a return for 120 or more |
| Day tickets | at least 25% of the fare paid for 15 to 29 minutes; at least 50% for 30 to 59; 100% of the single fare for 60 to 119; 100% of the total fare paid for 120 or more |
| Flexi season tickets | the ticket cost divided by 16, then similar percentages, with 120 minutes or more worth two single journeys |
Southern says a response typically takes 20 working days, or 5 days if there is no disruption period.
How to Claim
- online or by post, as set out on its page
Time limit: 28 days of your delayed journey.
Which Tickets Count
Proof of travel varies by ticket type: it lists paper tickets, eTickets, smartcards, Oyster, mTickets and sTickets.
How You Are Paid
Bank transfer, an e-voucher (needs an online account), PayPal (needs a PayPal account), cashable National Rail vouchers, or a charity donation. Postal claims are limited and cannot include financial details.
If Southern Does Not Put It Right
Southern is listed by the Rail Ombudsman. Allow the train company 40 working days to resolve your complaint, or until it sends a final response (deadlock letter) if that comes sooner, then you can take it to the Rail Ombudsman. See the full Southern complaints guide.
