ScotRail Delay Repay: How to Claim Train Delay Compensation
How to claim ScotRail Delay Repay compensation: the delay thresholds, how to claim, the time limit and what to do if it is refused.
ScotRail says you can claim Delay Repay for delays of 30 minutes or more. Consumer Protection UK is independent and is not connected to ScotRail. This page sets out what ScotRail itself says on its official page, checked on 4 October 2026.
What You Get Back
| Delay or situation | As ScotRail states it |
|---|---|
| 30 to 59 minutes | 50% of a single ticket or 25% of a return |
| 1 to 2 hours | the full single ticket cost or half a return |
| 2 hours or more | the whole ticket cost |
Temporary timetables may affect how eligibility is worked out.
How to Claim
- online
- by post
Time limit: 28 days of the delay.
Which Tickets Count
ScotRail’s page names single and return tickets. It does not say whether season tickets or other ticket types qualify. You need a smartcard number, or copies of paper tickets and photocards.
How You Are Paid
Rail vouchers (valid 12 months across Great Britain), PayPal, or cash exchanged at ticket offices within 28 days of the voucher being issued. You can also donate it to Age Scotland.
If ScotRail Does Not Put It Right
ScotRail is listed by the Rail Ombudsman. Allow the train company 40 working days to resolve your complaint, or until it sends a final response (deadlock letter) if that comes sooner, then you can take it to the Rail Ombudsman. See the full ScotRail complaints guide.
