Buses, Coaches, Ferries and Taxis
Ferry and long-distance coach passengers have set rights when services are delayed or cancelled, including refunds, re-routing, care and sometimes compensation. For local buses, complain to the operator first and then to the free Bus Users service (outside London).

Ferries
Delays
Re-routing, Refunds and Care
If a ferry is delayed by 90 minutes or more, you should be offered re-routing or a refund (paid within 7 days), plus refreshments from 90 minutes. If you cannot be re-routed, overnight accommodation up to £70 a night for up to 3 nights, except for weather delays. source
Compensation
For late arrival by ferry you can get 25% of the ticket price if the delay is at least 1 hour (journeys up to 4 hours), 2 hours (4 to 8 hours) or 6 hours (over 24 hours), and 50% if the delay is twice those times. It is paid within one month; amounts of £5 or less are not paid. source
Exceptions and Complaints
No ferry refund or compensation is due for unforeseen weather that makes sailing unsafe, or extraordinary events such as natural disasters or strikes. Complain to the company first; the Maritime and Coastguard Agency can review your case. source
Coaches
Delays and Cancellations
On regular coach services of 250 km or more, if a departure is cancelled or delayed by more than 120 minutes you must be offered re-routing or a refund (within 14 days). If you are not offered that choice, you can get 50% of the ticket price as compensation as well. source
Complaints
Complain to the coach company within 3 months of the journey. It must respond within 1 month and give a final reply within 3 months. source
Local Buses
Bus Complaints
For local buses, complain to the operator and give it 14 working days. Then Bus Users can help for free with journeys outside London and Northern Ireland in the last 12 months. In London, use London TravelWatch. source
Taxis and Minicabs
Licensing and Booking
Taxis and private hire vehicles (minicabs) must be licensed by the local council, or by Transport for London in London. A minicab can only be pre-booked; a taxi can also be hailed or hired at a rank in the area where it is licensed. source
Unlicensed Drivers
Report an unlicensed taxi, minicab, driver or operator to the council for the area where you saw it, or to Transport for London in London. Call 999 if anyone is in immediate danger. source
